Things to take home
There are plenty of craft stalls and shops around the Plaza de Armas and on Luzuriaga, although crafts tend to be of a better quality in Cusco, Arequipa, Lima and Puno.
Supermarkets
There are several supermarkets in Huaraz, although none is particularly large. Supermarket Militos (Sucre 185) has a rather small selection. Better is Market Ortiz (Luzuriaga 401), which also has a better selection of dehydrated food.
Markets
The main market has a good selection of fresh food.
Books and maps
Reasonable maps of the area are available for $4 from tourist information in the museum on the Plaza de Armas. However, by far the best map of the area is the Alpenvereinskarte, available in many agencies for $12. However, only the northern Cordillera is currently available.
Equipment
There are many agencies in Huaraz that rent out and sell trekking and climbing equipment, including boots, tents, jackets, ropes and camping gas. Prices are more expensive than in Europe or the US, although good equipment can be found if you shop around. Dehydrated food is also available in some agencies and in supermarkets.
Photography
There are plenty of photography shops on Av. Luzuriaga offering development and selling films. Kodak film is widely available, although Fuji slide film is very difficult to find.
