Travel services
Tourist information
There is no official tourist information office in Huaraz, although the INC at the Museo Regional de Ancash on the Plaza de Armas gives good information. The Casa de Guías also can give general advice, although it is far more useful for advice on trekking and climbing.
Travel agencies
There are many agencies in Huaraz offering a variety of services. Some of these specialise in day trips, although there are also many that offer good trekking and climbing services. Piramide and Explorandes are among the best, although are also very expensive. A reasonable intermediate agency is Montrek. Whichever agency you choose, ensure that your guide is registered. Ask to see their carnet.
Private guides
The Casa de Guías (Parque Ginebra 28-G, T/F 721811, casa_de_guias@hotmail.com) acts as a general information centre for visitors to Huaraz, and also offers climbing and trekking services. The guides at the Casa de Guías are all registered and should know the area very well. They charge $40 per day to act as a trekking guide. Guides for climbing are more expensive, starting at about $60 per day for a straightforward peak, such as Pisco, to $80 per day for Huascarán or Alpamayo. If you want to meet other travellers to trek or climb with, you can leave a note in the Casa de Guías.
