Air connections
Juliaca airport serves the entire area, including Puno. There are currently flights to Arequipa and Lima, although there have also been services to Cusco in the past. Several airlines have offices in Juliaca, including Lan Peru (San Román 125), Aerocontinente (San Román 135) and TANS (San Román 152).
Bus connections
JThere are good bus connections to the entire south of Peru, and plenty combis to towns in the highlands. There is a bus station, although many of the companies have other offices, generally near the bus station. The bus station is about 10 blocks down Jr. San Martín, at the intersection with Circumvalación, the other side of the railway line. Take a tricycle taxi, as it can be dangerous to walk.
Puno
JThere are plenty of minibuses and combis to Puno, leaving every few minutes. The journey takes about 45 minutes and costs between $0.30 and $0.50. The main terminal is on Plaza Bolognesi.
Arequipa
JMost buses to Arequipa now go via Puno and Desaguadero, which although longer, is all paved. The journey takes about 12 hours and costs $6. Ormeño has a bus with heating at 6pm. Señor de Los Milagros has buses with heating at 8.30am and 6pm. Cruz del Sur has buses with heating and a video at 7.30am and 6.30pm.
Cusco
JThere are plenty of buses from Juliaca to Cusco, mostly passing through from Puno, taking about 6 hours. Decent companies include Imexso, with buses at 9am and 9pm for $8, Power, with several buses throughout the day, and Cisnes, again with several buses throughout the day. Cruz del Sur has a basic service at 2pm for $4.
Lima
JThere are several buses from Juliaca to Lima, taking between 20 and 25 hours. Ormeño has a very good Royal Class (bus-cama) service at 3pm for $34, and a basic service at 6pm for $17. Carpio Express also has a service for $17.
Lampa
JCombis for Lampa, 45 minutes from Juliaca, leave from Ricardo Palma near the Santa Barbara market.
Putina
JCombis for Putina, 2 hours from Juliaca, leave from the Mercado Pedro Vilcapasa.
Huancané
JCombis for Huancané, 1 hour from Juliaca, leave from near the Grifo San Juan de Coro.
Pucara
JTake a bus going to Cusco and get off at Pucara.
Train connections
Juliaca has branches running to Puno, Cusco and Arequipa. It is not possible, or practical, to take the train from Juliaca to Puno, as the distance is so short. The train station is on Plaza Bolognesi.
Arequipa
JThere are three trains a week to Arequipa, coming from Puno, costing $20. On Monday, the train leaves at 10.35am and arrives at around 8pm. On Thursday and Sunday the train leaves at 8am and arrives at around 5.30pm.
Cusco
JThere are four trains a week to Cusco, leaving on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday at 9am, arriving at 4.45pm. The basic service costs $19, and the more comfortable carriages are $30. No food is provided.
