There are plenty of boats leaving for the different islands from the port, located at the end of Av. El Puerto. Boats to Taquile and the Uros islands tend to leave around 7.30am, and boats to Amantaní leave around 8.30am. Return trips to Taquile, including a stop at the Uros islands, cost $4. Trips that go to the Uros islands, Amantaní and Taquile cost $6. The Uros islands commonly visited are about 30 minutes from Puno. Amantaní is about another 3 hours past the Uros islands. Taquile is about 3 hours from Puno, or one hour from Amantaní.
It is no more expensive to take an organised tour from one of the agencies. Return trips to the Uros islands, leaving around 9am and returning later in the morning, cost $4. Return day trips to Taquile, leaving in the morning and returning late afternoon, cost around $7. Two-day trips to Uros, Amantaní, where you spend a night, and Taquile cost $10, including accommodation and three meals with a family on Amantaní. These leave around 8.30am and return around 4pm the following day. These tours include a guide. It is also possible to organise a longer tour with an agency, spending several days on the islands.
If you arrive in Puno early in the morning, it is easy to go to the port and catch a boat to the islands, even with one of the agencies.
