Peru Guide : Lake Titicaca and Islands > Places to stay

It is now possible to spend the night on all of the main islands on the Peruvian side of the lake. If you are interested in staying on one of the Uros islands, there is a basic hostel that has been built for tourists. Ask for exact details in any of the agencies in Puno.

There is also a hostel on Taquile, although it is more common to stay with a family. Although this can be organised when you arrive on the island, it is easier to do so through an agency in Puno. Some people also choose to camp on the island.

If you want to stay on Amantaní, which is now the most common island for travellers to spend the night, it is usual to stay with a local family. For $3 you receive a bed and three good, vegetarian meals. Although it may be possible to organise this independently when you arrive at the island, it is usual for agencies to organise this, and community leaders normally deal with agencies directly. There are no hostels on the island, although it is possible to camp by the shore of the lake.

If you wish to spend the night on Taquile or Amantaní, it is strongly recommended that you do so with a local family. Not only will this provide some income for the family, but it will also allow you to experience their way of life, which is probably the most interesting aspect of visiting the islands. You cannot choose the family you stay with, as they are assigned, but they all appear to be very friendly. Accommodation with families is in adobe houses, and plenty of blankets are provided. However, a sleeping bag can be useful.
