Chincha Alta is an important agricultural town 200km south of Lima, with a population of over 100,000. It is also the home for many of Peru?s black population, and is the centre of the Afro-Peruano music and dance scene. Most of the black population are descendants of slaves brought over in the colonial era to work on plantations. Although there is not much to see in Chincha, it has some lively festivals, and it is worth stopping in the town at the end of February, when the Verano Negro is held, celebrating black culture. Chincha Baja, nearby, has little of interest, although it is close to the archaeological ruins of La Centinela. There can be a rather unpleasant smell of fishmeal at certain times.
