There is much good food in Tarapoto. Local specialities include Juanis, large balls of rice and meat wrapped in banana leaves. Fish and fruit are also very good, and the local giant river prawns are excellent.
In addition to the restaurants in Tarapoto, there are also several restaurants outside of town, which make for pleasant trips. The restaurant at the Laguna Venecia ($$) is good for local specialities, and is a pleasant place for the afternoon. There are a couple of restaurants close to the Ahuashiyacu Falls, including El Mono y El Gato ($$).
