There are a couple of Internet cafes on the streets around the Plaza de Armas.

The post office is on the 4th block of Jr. San Martín.

Crime and safety

The police station is on the corner of Jr. Ramírez Hurtado and Jr. Rioja.

Health

The EsSalud hospital is on the Plaza de Armas.

Local transport

There are plenty of mototaxis for trips in and around town. There are also a few taxis in town. Combis to most of the nearby towns also leave from Tarapoto. Colectivos to Lamas leave from Marginal Sur, taking 30 minutes, and cost $1. Colectivos to the Laguna Sauce leave from the Banda de Shilcayo, taking about 2 hours. These charge $3.50 per person.

Banco de Crédito (Visa cash machine) is at the Jr Maynas, just off the Plaza de Armas.

Banco Continental (Visa cash machine) is on the Plaza de Armas.

Interbank (no cash machine) is on Jr. Grau, just off the Plaza de Armas.

Moneychangers

There are several places to change dollars near the Banco de Crédito and on the Plaza de Armas.

Tourist information

There is no official tourist information office, although you can get some information from the Camera de Comercio and the travel agencies.

Travel agencies

There are a couple of travel agencies in town, offering flights and some basic tourist services. These include Turismo Pajatén, at Jr. Ramón Castilla 159, which is helpful. Tours are generally expensive. For example, tours to the Ahuashiyacu waterfalls typically cost around $20 per person, and tours to Lago Sauce cost $50 per person. It is cheaper to hire a taxi. Cesar Reátegui, at the Hotel Patarashca, is very helpful and organises tours to less visited areas.
