Tarapoto is known at the city of the palms, and is only 330m above sea level. In 1782, the Bishop of Trujillo founded Tarapoto, named after a local type of palm tree. The city itself is large and unattractive, and suffers from very hot and humid weather. Despite being in the jungle, the surrounding area has been completely deforested, although the hills are still beautiful and there are many lovely spots nearby.
