Peru Guide : The Northern Highlands > Attractions around Chachapoyas

The Chachapoyas area is a treasure-trove of archaeological jewels, and there are over 600 sites that can be visited. Apart from Kuélap and one or two others, the sites are rarely visited, and you are likely to have the places to yourself, allowing you to feel like a real explorer. Adding to this feeling is the fact that few of the sites have been cleared or investigated extensively, and even in Kuélap the ruins are overgrown with lush vegetation. It is possible to get to most of the sites with public transport, although this is often irregular and at awkward times. The area is also full of traditional towns set is spectacular scenery. There are many wonderful walks in the area, often on trails built by the Chachapoyas or the Incas.
