The road leading from Cajamarca to Trujillo crosses some beautiful mountain scenery, and although the road via Pacasmayo is more common, there is more to see on this route. The star attractions are the ruins of Marcahuamachuco and the Río Abiseo National Park, including the archaeological ruins in and around it. The latter is a UNESCO Natural and Cultural World Heritage Site - one of only 23 worldwide. Although normally closed to visitors, there is still much to see and appreciate in this area.
