Peru Guide : Cajamarca > Getting here

Air connections

There is a small airport in Cajamarca with daily flights to Lima. Flights are in propeller rather than jet planes, due to the runway being rather short. A taxi to the airport should cost about $1.50.

Bus connections

Cajamarca has good bus connections to the coast via Pacasmayo, and it is also possible to visit other areas in the highlands from Cajamarca, such as Huamachuco and Celendín. Although it is possible to go from Cajamarca to Chachapoyas, via Celendín, this is not advisable as the road is in poor condition, very slow and can be dangerous. The road from Chiclayo to Chachapoyas is paved most of the way, and although the distance is much longer the journey is much quicker.

The road from the coast to Cajamarca sometimes gets difficult in the rainy season, and it can be closed.

Most bus companies have their offices on Av. Atahualpa. A taxi from the centre costs $0.50, or combis to Baños del Inca pass the bus offices.

Lima

The journey to Lima takes about 14 hours on a paved road. Tepsa has a basic service for $8 at 5pm. Linea has a semi-cama service at 7pm for $17. Cruz del Sur has a service at 7pm, with semi-cama seats costing $20 and bus-cama seats $26. This includes a taxi in Lima to your destination. Ormeño (Vía de Evitamiento) has a service at 8pm for $23 from Friday to Sunday, and $20 for the rest of the week.

Trujillo

All buses to Lima pass through Trujillo, about 6 hours from Cajamarca. Linea also has buses to Trujillo, which pass through Pacasmayo. These leave at 10.30am and 10pm and cost $5. Additionally, there is a bus-cama service at 10.30pm for $7.

Chiclayo

Chiclayo is about 6 hours from Cajamarca, and tickets cost $4. El Cumbe has buses at 7am, 11am, 3pm and 9pm. Linea has buses at 11pm.

Celendín

Transportes Atahualpa has buses at 7am and 1pm to Celendín. The journey takes 4 hours and costs $3. On Thursdays and Sundays there are connections to Chachapoyas, a further 12 to 14 hours away.

Cajabamba and Huamachuco

Transportes Atahualpa has a service to Cajabamba at 12.30pm for $3, taking about 5 hours. Peru Bus has services to Cajabamba at 1am and 2.30pm. From Cajabamba there are connecting buses to Huamachuco.

Bambamarca and Chota

Transportes Atahualpa has an 11am bus to Chota (8 hours), which also passes through Bambamarca (5 hours), for $6. From Chota there are buses to Chiclayo, a further 14 hours journey.
