Feb/Mar
Cajamarca is known as the capital of the Peruvian Carnival, and locals prepare costumes months in advance. Each neighbourhood participates in choosing the carnival queen. There are numerous dances and parades, and water balloons are thrown at everyone, as in all of Peru.
Mar/April
The Easter week festival is celebrated with processions throughout of the region. In Porcón an important Palm Sunday parade takes place, with a figure of the Lord paraded on a white donkey.
May 15
Festival of San Isidro Labrador in Ichocán. Agricultural workers decorate their yokes and houses with the fruits of their harvest in honour of their patron saint.
June 24
Festival of San Juan, celebrated in Chota, Cutervo and San Pablo, with religious activities, bull runs and fairs.
July 31
Festival of San Ignacio de Loyola in Loyola.
Sep 7
Festival of Huanchaco, in the Baños del Inca district.
First Sunday in Oct
Festival of the Virgen del Rosario, celebrated for eight days in Cajabamba. There are bull runs, agricultural and crafts fairs and a folk dancing competition.
Dec 24 Christmas is celebrated with music and dance. In Cajamarca there is a carol competition.
