Tumbes is Peru?s most northerly city, a few seconds north of Iquitos, and is it less than 4º south of the equator. Beware of mosquitoes here as cases of malaria have been reported. The town is rather unattractive, and although there are a few areas of interest nearby, the main reason for visiting the city is to cross the border with Ecuador. Since the peace accord with Ecuador was reached, military tension in the town has decreased markedly. However, border towns are always sensitive areas, and care should always be exercised, especially near military installations.
