Piura is located on the border of the dry coastal desert to the south and the lusher tropical region to the north. The city was originally founded in 1532, although the current location dates from 1588, as the town was moved several times due to pirate attacks and plagues of eye diseases, which residents tried to escape. The HG Wells story, The Country of the Blind, is probably based on the history of Piura.

The city does not receive many visitors apart from those heading into the mountains of Huancabamba. However, there are a few attractions in and around the city making it a worthwhile stop for those passing through
