Internet

Trujillo appears to have more Internet cafes than any other city in Peru. There are plenty around the Plaza de Armas and on Jr. Independencia.

Post

The post office is on the corner of Independencia and Bolognesi.

Crime and safety

The tourist police have an office on Jr. Independencia.

The centre of Trujillo is relatively safe, and the market area is not particularly dangerous. However, the south east corner of the centre, from Jr. Colón to Jr. Pizarro, can be slightly dangerous after dark.

Health

There are 3 main hospitals in Trujillo. The Hospital Regional is close to the Estadio Mansiche, the Hospital Obrero is on Prolong. Unión and the Hospital Belén is on Bolívar, one block from the Plaza. The best private clinics in Trujillo are the Clinica Peruana Americana (Av. Mansiche 702, T 231261) and the Clinica Sanchez Ferrer (Los Laureles 436, Urb. California, T 285541).

Immigration offices

The Ministerio del Interior is at Av. Larco cuadra 12, T282217. It may be possible to extend tourist visas here.

Local transport

Buses and combis

There are plenty of combis around Trujillo, although these are all outside of the centre, and there are lines to most of the major archaeological sites near Trujillo.

Taxis

Taxis charge about $0.50 for short trips in the centre and just outside. A taxi can be hired for about $3 per hour, although if going to places outside of the centre they will usually charge more. A taxi to Huaca de la Luna, Huaca del Sol, Huaca Arco Iris, Huaca Esmeralda and Chan Chán, including the museum, will charge about $20. All official taxis are painted yellow.

Bull fighting

There is a bullring in Trujillo and there are fights during the Festival de Primavera and the Señor de los Milagros.

Cock fighting

There is a Coliseo de Gallos on the road to Huanchaco.

Travel services

Tourist information

The tourist police run a good tourist information office on the 6th block of Jr. Independencia. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable.

Travel agencies

There are several agencies offering tours of the different sites. Trujillo Tours and Guía Tours are probably the best, although they are expensive. They charge about $15 per person for a tour to Huaca de la Luna and the same for a tour to Chan Chán and Huaca Arco Iris.

Private guides

Multilingual guides can be hired at the Huaca de la Luna and Chan Chán, and they charge about $6 for each site. Alternatively, a guide can be hired from Trujillo to take you to several sites. There are various private guides, many who speak English. Most hotels will be able to put you in touch with one. Some of the tourist police also act as private guides, and some of these are actually qualified tourist guides. These tend to be cheaper than other guides, although they generally only speak Spanish. Jorge Piscoya is good and very knowledgeable on the area. Ask for him in the tourist information office. A guide, including transport, to Chan Chán, Huaca de la Luna, Huaca Arco Iris and Huaca Esmeralda will cost between $20 and $40.
