Peru Guide : Puerto Maldonado > Getting here

The only practical way to get to Puerto Maldonado is to fly. There are no buses, although there is a road that is travelled by lorries. The journey is long, taking several days, and uncomfortable. A very entertaining description of the journey can be found in Matthew Parris?s Inca Kola. There are no regular boat services up or down any of the rivers around Puerto Maldonado.

There are direct flights to Puerto Maldonado from Lima and Cusco. However, in 2001 supply was far outstripped by demand, and so flights were fully booked up to two weeks in advance. If you are planning on travelling to Puerto Maldonado it is advisable to book flights as far in advance as possible.

TANS Peru and Aerocontinente offer flights from Lima and Cusco to Puerto Maldonado. Almost all flights stop in Cusco on the way to or from Lima.

The small airport is a few kilometres from the centre of town. A mototaxi will charge $2 into Puerto Maldonado.

The Aerocontinente office is at Av. León Velarde 584, T 572004.

The TANS Peru office is at León Velarde 147.
