Peru Guide : Pucallpa > Attractions

The city of Pucallpa is rather modern and not particularly attractive. The main attraction in the area is Lago Yarinacocha, although also worth visiting is the Parque Natural de Pucallpa (**) (Carretera Federico Basadre km 4.2, open 9am-5pm, entrance $1). This is a zoo with a good collection of jungle wildlife, including giant river otters, tapir, ocelots, jaguars, puma, caiman, anacondas and other snakes, lots of monkeys, deer, wild boar and many jungle birds, including toucans and macaws. Unfortunately, many of the cages are far too small, although the collection of animals is excellent. The site also contains the Museo Regional, a small museum with local crafts, clothing, ceramics and fossils. To get to the zoo, take a colectivo market Pista from Jr. Ucayali and ask for the Parque Natural.

At km 31 on the road to Tingo María is El Encanto, a tourist resort with swimming pools and a restaurant. At km 34 is Pimentacocha, where there are natural pools for bathing. There are sulphurous waters at Honoria. Take the Campo Verde ? Tuornavista highway to km 31 and turn left. Honoria is 12km further. Another popular tourist resort close to Pucallpa is La Divina Montaña, with pools, restaurants and dancing.
