There is a good selection of hotels in Iquitos, ranging from the luxurious to the very basic. Prices are reasonable, in part due to the lack of sales tax. The 18% VAT charge is not levied in the whole of the Loreto department. This means that you cannot get the sales tax discount on hotels here as you can in the rest of Peru. Street-facing rooms are often noisy due to the mototaxis whizzing past. Air conditioning or a ventilator are fairly much essential, especially in December and January, when temperatures can rise to over 30oC. Many cheaper hotels only have cold water, although even some basic places have hot water in the showers.
