Tocache/Juanjuí/Tarapoto
The road through the Huallaga Valley is along one of the main coca-growing routes in Peru and is therefore prone to narco-terrorism. However, things have improved greatly in recent years, and if the road is travelled by day there are rarely problems, although travel on this route is still not recommended. Colectivos to Tocache leave from next to the Banco de la Nación on Av Raymondi, taking 3 ½ hours and charging $7. From there, pick-up trucks leave for Juanjuí, taking around 7 hours for the rough journey. This costs $8 in the back of the truck or $12 in the front. From Juanjuí, there is regular bus transport to Tarapoto, 5 hours away.
