Peru Guide : The Central Highlands > Huánuco

The city of Huánuco lies in a very beautiful, fertile valley, and the area around the city has been inhabited for thousands of years, with cave paintings dating back to 6,000BC having been discovered. The Yarowilca Empire had its capital at Guanaco Pampa, which means land of the guanaco, a type of wild llama. The Spanish arrived in the area in 1533, founding the city in 1539, although few colonial buildings remain today.

Huánuco has a wonderful climate in the dry season, when it is warm and sunny every day. The town advertises itself as having the best climate in the world
