Peru Guide : The Central Highlands > Chanchamayo

The name Chanchamayo refers to the province containing the towns of San Ramón and La Merced. San Ramón, the first of the two towns, is less than 80km from Tarma, although the road plunges almost 2,500m. The journey is spectacular, descending into beautiful mountainous jungle with waterfalls on either side. Although neither of the towns is attractive, they both serve as good bases for exploring the surrounding countryside, which is very beautiful and is full of rivers, caves and waterfalls. The road is completely paved. This is the easiest jungle region to reach by road from Lima, being only six hours away, and it is also some of the most beautiful scenery in the whole of Peru. The area is a major coffee-growing region.
