The small town of Tarma is set in some of the most beautiful mountains in central Peru, and is known as La Perla de los Andes, The Pearl of the Andes. The town could best be described as pleasant, although it is not particularly attractive, and although the city was founded in 1538, little remains of its colonial past. There is little to do in the town itself, apart from sit in the Plaza de Armas, or visit the observatory at the Hotel Central.
