Crime and safety

The area around the Molina Unión bus station and the lower blocks of Calle Real is rather dangerous after dark. The police station is at Av. Giráldez 574.

Combis and buses

There are plenty of combis that go down the Mantaro Valley. Combis in town charge $0.20 per journey. Most combis to nearby villages leave from the corner of Av. Giráldez and Av. Huancas. Plenty of combis from the Plaza go to El Tambo where there are a number of services.

Taxis

A taxi in the centre charges about $0.50 per journey.

Banco de Crédito (Visa cash machine) at Paseo de Breña on the Plaza de la Constitución.

Banco Continental (Visa cash machine) at Calle Real 631, 1 block from the Plaza de la Constitución.

Interbank (Visa, MasterCard, Cirrus cash machine) at Calle Real 646, 1 block from the Plaza de la Constitución.

Moneychangers

There are many moneychangers on Calle Real, near the Plaza de la Constitución.

Sport and activities

Football

The local team, Deportivo Huanca, plays in the Peruvian first division in the Estadio Huancayo at the end of Av. Arica. Unión Minas, another team in the Peruvian first division, plays home games in different cities, including Huancayo.

Tourist information

There is a helpful tourist information booth at the entrance to the Casa del Artesano on the Plaza de la Constitución. Many hotels and agencies sell a travel guide to the Junín department (including Huancayo, Tarma, Chanchamayo, Satipo and Junín) for $4, which contains good information on the whole area.

Travel agencies

There are plenty of travel agencies around the Plaza offering basic tours of the Mantaro Valley. Incas del Peru, run by Lucho Hurtado, is helpful with information, and offers different tours, in addition to trips in the Valley. These include trips to the jungle of Satipo, as well as textiles and language courses. The agency also rents mountain bikes for $15 per day.
