Peru Guide : Huancayo > Attractions

The Plaza de la Constitución is an attractive main square with a neoclassical Cathedral from the beginning of the 20th century on its east face. The Parque de la Identidad (**) is an attractive Guadi-esque park based on traditional Huancaíno themes, and contains giant carved gourds and ceramics as well as many typical plants from the area. There are stalls nearby serving traditional food from the area, and it is a pleasant place to have lunch. The park is located in the San Antonio district, and is best reached by taxi.  The Museo Saleciano (**) (In Saleciano school across river, open Tue, Thur-Sat 8.15am-11am, 2.15pm-5pm, Wed 8.15am-11am) is a natural history museum with a large collection of stuffed birds, animals and snakes, butterflies, insects (including the enormous Titanus Gigantus, an eight-inch flying bug), spiders, rocks, shells and fossils.

Just outside of the city is Torre Torre (***), a rock forest created by wind erosion in the sandstone. These giant fingers form beautiful shapes against the hills surrounding Huancayo, and it is a great place to explore. A taxi to the base of the rock forest charges $0.70. Do not go alone, as it can be dangerous.
