Cusco is an excellent centre for adventure sports, and many of the agencies in town specialise in such activities.
Mountain biking
The area around Cusco is very good for mountain biking, with trips possible from one day to several weeks. A typical day trip could be to Moray and Maras, close to the Sacred Valley.
Several agencies specialise in such trips, including EcoMontana at Garcilaso 265.
River Rafting
There is some very good white-water rafting near Cusco. One or two day trips are possible on the Urubamba River, usually downriver from Ollantaytambo, and although these are relatively tame, not going above Class III, the trip is very beautiful. A one-day trip, with a couple of hours on the river, usually costs about $25.
More adventurous rafting is possible on the Apurímac River, four hours from Cusco. This is usually a four day tour, involving travelling to the start point on the first day, and some light practice. The second and third days are spent rafting, and the return to Cusco is on the fourth day. This river is very isolated and beautiful, and the rafting is very good, with rapids up to class V passed. There are a few parts of the river that are too dangerous, and some portage is required. Camping is on the beach by the side of the river. There are lots of insects, so bring repellent. The four-day trip generally costs around $160-$180.
For those wanting something a bit different, some agencies offer the occasional trip down the Tambopata River, from the Puno highlands to Puerto Maldonado. This is a long journey, taking around nine days, and offers wonderful wildlife as well as good rafting. The trip usually costs around $800 per person.
Obviously, going with a reputable operator is highly recommended, especially as there is no regulation in Cusco. However, many of the agencies seem to be becoming more professional, which is a good sign. Some reputable agencies include Mayuc, on the Plaza de Armas and Instinct at Procuradores 50, just off the Plaza de Armas.
Other activities
Horse riding, Paragliding and hot air ballooning are all possible in the Cusco area. Ask around to find the best operators.
