Peru Guide : Cusco > From Cusco to Juliaca

The road from Cusco to Juliaca is well known to many tourists, who take this route on to Puno and Lake Titicaca. This is a beautiful journey over the high sierra, and the views of the mountains rising over the altiplano are superb, especially approaching La Raya, the highest point of the journey. Sit on the left-hand side of the bus or train from Cusco to Puno (or the right-hand side for the reverse trip) for the best views. Most travellers do not stop on the route, taking a direct bus or train between the two cities. For those who do decide to stop, however, there are plenty of areas of interest.

Although the train is the traditional means by which travellers choose to travel this route, it is rather slow and quite expensive. The road follows the same route, and as it is paved all the way, it is far quicker. There are now several luxury bus services that go from Cusco to Puno, and the tourist bus company First Class offers trips from Cusco to Puno and vice versa, for $25. This not only includes the journey between the two cities, but also includes brief guided tours of Andahuaylillas, Raqchi, Sicuani, where lunch is provided, and Pucara.
