There is a good, mostly paved, road west of Cusco, heading to Abancay, the capital of the Department of Apurímac. From there, the road heads to the pretty town of Andahuaylas and it is possible to go on to Ayacucho on a very bad road. Very few tourists come to this part of Peru, although for those who do there are the rewards of some very beautiful mountain scenery, traditional towns and spectacular Inca ruins.
