There are at least 230 hotels in Cusco, with accommodation ranging from only a few dollars a night to over $250. Outside of Lima, Cusco has the most expensive accommodation in Peru, although it is generally possible to find a decent room within most budgets. Despite the abundance of accommodation, many hotels are fully booked during June, July and August, so it is a good idea to make a reservation in these months. It is also often possible to get a discount if turning up at the hotel, even in the high season, as long there are a few rooms available. Just ask.
Many of the cheapest hostels are around the San Pedro station, which is a somewhat dangerous area, especially after dark. There are also many budget hotels in the very pleasant district of San Blas, five minutes from the centre. Rooms here tend to fill up quickly. Many other budget hotels can be found on Calle Saphi.
Many of the hotels, including cheaper ones, are often in converted colonial buildings, with lovely central courtyards. The three best hotels in the city, the Monasterio, the Libertador and the Novotel, all have lovely colonial sections. Most of the better hotels have oxygen bottles for those feeling the effects of the altitude.
