Peru Guide : City of Cusco > Places to eat

There are restaurants in Cusco to suit all budgets, with many upmarket establishments having opened up in recent years. Most of the restaurants in the centre cater primarily for tourists, and are therefore more expensive than restaurants in many other cities. However, there are also a few cheaper places aimed at the budget traveller and others aimed at the local market. Many of the budget restaurants are on Calle Procuradores and have good-value set meals for around $3.

Traditional Cusqueña food can be found in picanterías, although several of these now cater for a largely tourist market. Some typical, very tasty, dishes include chicharrón de chancho, deep-fried pork served with onion and mint, and lechón, whole roast pork. These can be found in some typical restaurants in Cusco, and in some of the towns nearby. Saylla, 20 minutes south-east of Cusco, has many restaurants serving chicharrón. Cuy, guinea pig, can also be found in many restaurants.
