Lima has a wonderful night scene, with excellent bars, discos and clubs. It is also the only place in Peru where there are any decent cinemas, with many multiplexes showing the latest Hollywood offerings, as well as some more art house films. Lima also has a number of theatres and cultural centres, which often stage various events. The best nightlife in Lima is in Miraflores and Barranco, although there are other nightspots throughout the city. To find out what is going on, the El Comercio newspaper has a fairly exhaustive listings section for Lima, with theatre, film and music covered.
Bars, clubs and discos
Barranco is one of the trendiest, and liveliest, areas in the evening, with many bars and discos. There are plenty of good places for a night out on Jr. Sánchez Carrión, just off the Plaza Municipal. There are also many nightspots in Miraflores.
Cinemas
Lima has some good cinemas showing the latest films from Hollywood, as well as a few Latin American and European films. Most films are shown in their original language with Spanish subtitles. There are good multi-screen cinemas in the Larcomar complex and in the Jockey Plaza shopping centre. Tickets are about $4.00 per person, although on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays there are often discounts.
Theatres
Peru does not have a thriving theatre scene, but what there is, is concentrated in Lima, The city has a few theatres showing Peruvian and European productions. Plays are in Spanish unless a cultural centre from another country is putting on a production. The main theatres are in Miraflores and Barranco, although there are a few others throughout the city. The theatre putting on the biggest productions is probably Teatro Marzano at General Suárez 409 (Tel 445 7347) in Miraflores.
