Faced with strong competition from hotels in Miraflores and San Isidro, many hotels in the centre have shut down or have significantly cut prices in recent years, especially at the top end of the scale, which means that bargains are possible. Most of Lima?s tourist attractions are in the centre, and the area is far less dangerous than it used to be, although most people still prefer to stay in Miraflores and take a taxi into the centre to visit the area.
There are plenty of cheap hostels ($3 per person) around Plaza Bolognesi, although these are generally not particularly clean and the area is dangerous after dark.
